Surgical Tendon Repair & Fracture Management

Fracture Repair

Once a diagnosis of a fracture is made, the treatment will vary. Many times splinting the affected area for several weeks will allow the fracture to heal. A displaced fracture when the involved bones are out of alignment, or a fracture involving a joint will need an operation to restore the proper position of the bones and joint. This may be done with pins, screws, or plates with screws. The earlier the diagnosis is made, the quicker you will be on the road to recovery.

Tendon Repair

Tendon repair is surgery done to treat a torn or otherwise damaged tendon. Tendons are soft, band-like tissues that connect muscles to bone. When the muscles contract, the tendons pull the bones and cause the joints to move. When tendon damage occurs, movement may be seriously limited. The damaged area may feel weak or painful. Tendon repair surgery may be helpful for people who have tendon injuries that are making it difficult for them to move a joint or are very painful.

Tendons can be torn either by an acute injury such as laceration/trauma or by chronic wear and tear over time, also known as an overuse injury.  A tendon can be torn by completely rupturing into two separate pieces, mostly commonly seen with the Achilles tendon.  Or tendons can develop partial tears or splits usually lengthwise, that never detach completely, like in the cases of peroneal or posterior tibial tendons of the foot and ankle.

Both types of tendon tears are repaired surgically using sutures or stitches to bring the torn parts of the tendon back together.  In severe tendon tears/ruptures, cadaver donated tendon or tendon transfers or transplantation from neighboring tendons may be necessary to repair a large defect.  Over time, the repaired tendon will heal and can return to near-normal function

Here at Family Footcare, we will help diagnose and guide you in picking the right procedure for your tendon injury.  We offer the latest techniques, including minimally invasive surgery for Achilles tendon repair called PARS (percutaneous Achilles repair system) and stem cell application to minimize scar tissue and adhesion formation along all tendon repairs to accelerate and improve tendon healing and repair.
