Caring for your Feet during Connecticut Summers
You probably don’t spend too much time in your day-to-day life thinking about your feet. However, when you face a foot injury, the pain forces you to think about your feet with every step you take. As summer begins and you prepare for long walks on the boardwalk and dipping your feet in the pool, it is crucial to care for your feet so you don’t miss out on any of the summer fun.
Lather on the Sunscreen
Apply a generous amount of sunscreen all over your feet anytime they are exposed to the sun — even if it is just for a few minutes. Since your shoes protect your feet from the sun during other months of the year, the skin on your feet is more sensitive to the sun and more likely to burn than other parts of your body. Be sure to reapply sunscreen regularly and reapply when you get out of the water to prevent sunburns.
Avoid Going Barefoot
Although it is tempting to kick off your shoes and go barefoot during the summer months, wearing shoes can help protect your feet from infections, sunburns, and other foot injuries. Wear shoes or flip-flops around public pools, at the waterpark, and in hotel rooms to avoid contracting infections such as plantar warts, athlete’s foot, and ringworm. Additionally, wearing shoes can protect your feet from burning on the scorching hot sand or pavement, being cut by sharp objects, and can help prevent slipping on wet surfaces.
Opt for Shoes Other Than Flip Flops
Flip-flops are great for throwing on around the pool, but you should avoid wearing them for extended periods of time. Flip-flops don’t offer much support or protection for your feet. Stick to wearing supportive shoes, like sneakers, for the majority of your activities this summer.
Keep Your Feet Dry
Sweaty feet are uncomfortable, and excess moisture can lead to fungal infections. Allow your feet to dry completely after getting out of the pool or ocean before putting on shoes or socks. Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking socks, and bring an extra pair of socks in case you need to change into a dry pair.
Stay Hydrated
You have probably been told countless times about the importance of staying hydrated in the summer heat, but did you know that staying hydrated can even help your feet? When you are dehydrated, your body holds on to fluids, which can lead to painful, swollen feet. Staying hydrated will minimize foot swelling, allowing you to be more comfortable being up on your feet and doing all the activities this summer.
